Processes are essential for all ERP Systems. Competitors have had this on their websites for a long time and also Microsoft provided a tool within the LCS Business process modeler (BPM). Since this was depreciated also Microsoft started a new initiative to provide a more business process oriented structure for Dynamics 365 implementations.
Whithin the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guidance the business processes will be more in central focus for the functionalty of the Dynamics 365 application as well as for the project implementation approach. This means to have functional business processes catalog as a base for the definiton of the project’s scope and for the project management.
Business Process Catalog
On the one hand, business processes are placed more at the center of a Dynamics 365 implementation when defining the requirements. For this purpose, existing applicable business processes have been structured in several levels for the breakdown operational processes:
- End to End processes
- Business Process Areas
- Business processes
- Applications patterns
In several iterations, the so-called business process catalog has developed from this, which has been publicly available for some time.

Business processes as project scope
On the other hand, the business process catalog is an excellent basis for recording the processes to be implemented together with the customer. So it makes sense that an “in scope” and “out of scope” definition is made on the basis of the business process catalog. After the in- and out-of-scope processes have been adopted, the customer and the implementation partner should have the same view of the project’s deliverables. The public Business Process Catalog can be downloaded and will be updatad up to four times during the year.
Project management based on business processes
Once the process list has been defined, project management can carry out project and sprint planning based on the in-scope business processes. The business process catalog provided by Microsoft here are standard processes that can be mapped to Dynamics 365 by parameterization, preperation or migration of master data and configuration . This should also enable a reliable project estimate based on the standard process. An importable Azure Devops process list is also provided for project management which requires some preperation and configuration for the DevOps project.
Define your processes & project scope
Based on the currently available business process catalog, I created a Business process catalog research report in Power BI to make it easier for consultants and users to find their way through the multitude of processes and application patterns. The tool allows a structured top-down selection based on the end-to-end process, or a keyword search in the processes and application scenarios.

For most of the processes are also links provided to jump directly to the nearest related Microsoft documentation of the Microsoft Dynamics Guidance platform.
